Common Mistakes That Affiliate Marketers Make

Posted on March 22, 2010 by Brian Lett

Great, you have joined an affiliate network, and you are ready to do whatever it takes to make enough money to quit your nine to five job. You have carefully selected which products you would like to promote, and now you are going to put them all over the Internet so that people will buy them and you can earn your commission. All you have to do is sit back and wait for you payment to arrive. Sounds good, right?

Before you break ground on that big mansion on the hill, here are a few mistakes many new affiliate marketers make that you will want to avoid.

1. Falling for the immense build up.

Each affiliate programs will make it clear to you how much money can be make. Is it possible to make the kind of money which is being alleged? Of course it is. Should you expect to see this kind of money in your first month or two? Of course not. Realize that online business is like an investment in your financial future. There is not future in overnight wealth schemes, because they are a mirage, and do not exist. What you need, is to have confidence in yourself. If you want to become a highly successful affiliate, you will become a highly successful affiliate. However, do not set your expectations on a claim that you will be earning six figures per month in the next sixty days. This will not happen.

2. Expecting instant results with little effort.

You need to be prepared to work in order to make money. If you started a printing business with a physical address, wouldn’t you expect to have to work for your customers in order for them to give you their money? Of course you would. First, you would need to make customers aware of your business via advertising. Then you would need to render services in order to earn money. Affiliate marketing is no different. You have a brand new online establishment. What are you going to do in order to get people to look at what you are offering?

3. Failure to plan and set goals.

You have probably heard the saying, plan your work and work your plan. You need to have a specific plan and clear, measurable goals. Many people join affiliate programs with the vague goal of wanting to make a lot of money. How much money? How quickly do you want it? (Try to be realistic here, making a million dollars in one month is not realistic.) Okay, you have your clear, specific goal. Now how are you going to get there. Again, think clear, specific steps here.

4. Advertising your affiliate link.

Of course, you need to advertise your affiliate link in order to track each sale to you. However, it is important that you own a website or blog. It is on your website or blog that you will advertise your affiliate link. Think about it. Each and every affiliate who is promoting a particular affiliate program has the same website as you do. This is not good. You want to stand out from the crowd. Furthermore, it is a good idea to add an opt-in section to your website or blog so that you can market other products to your visitors in the future. You cannot add an opt-in section to your affiliate link’s sales page.

5. Quitting

You have been working your affiliate program for 2, 3, maybe even 4 months now with very little to show for it. You are getting discouraged and beginning to wonder if this is worth it after all. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and figure out what it is you need to be doing. Learn more. Don’t quit. No one ever achieved success by quitting. Neither will you with affiliate network marketing.
